Questions about Sommy, answered

Questions we get asked most often, answered plainly. If yours isn't here, email support@sommy.ai and a real person will reply.

What is Sommy?

Sommy is an AI wine app that learns your individual taste and predicts whether you'll enjoy a specific bottle. It's built for people choosing something to drink, in a shop or a restaurant or at home, rather than for the trade. The whole idea is that whether a wine is good and whether you'll like it are two different questions, and only the second one is worth answering for you.

Has Sommy launched yet?

Not yet. Sommy is in development and you can join the wait list to be notified when the beta opens.

What does Sommy cost?

Sommy has two tiers. Explore is free. Cellar is $7.99 a month or $59.99 a year. You keep the price you signed up at: if the price rises it rises for new subscribers only, and an existing subscription stays at the rate it started on for as long as it stays active.

What devices will Sommy run on?

Sommy is a mobile app for iOS, iPadOS and Android. There's nothing to download yet, so the waitlist is the way to hear when it opens.

How does Sommy know what I'll like?

It builds a taste profile from what you rate. Every wine you score sharpens the picture, so the recommendations get more specific the longer you use it. You don't have to describe your taste in wine language up front, because the app works it out from your actual ratings rather than from a questionnaire.

Does Sommy score wines out of 100?

No, and it won't. Sommy doesn't publish numerical ratings for wines at all. A critic's score tells you what one experienced palate thought, which is useful but isn't the same as whether the bottle suits you. Sommy answers the second question instead, as a read on fit against your own profile.

Can Sommy help me choose from a restaurant wine list?

Yes, and that's one of the moments it's built for. Sommy can read the wine list at the restaurant you're sitting in and filter it against your taste, and it can do the same ahead of a booking so you arrive already knowing what's worth ordering.

I already rate wines in another app. Do I start from scratch?

No. Sommy can import your existing Vivino ratings, so it understands your taste from the first session rather than needing weeks of use before it becomes useful.

Does Sommy sell wine?

No. Sommy doesn't sell wine, take a cut of what you buy, or send you to a retailer. It's there to help you choose well, which means a recommendation is never influenced by what somebody wants to move.

Can I collaborate with my friends and family?

Not yet. Group planning is on the roadmap but is not part of the initial release.

Can I request a new feature for Sommy?

Yes. Send your feature ideas through the feature request page and they will be read.
